EWU women shine on track

Freshman Tierra White (Rogers High School) won the women’s high jump and the Eastern Washington women’s indoor track and field team tied for fourth place at the Big Sky Conference Championships Saturday in Flagstaff, Arizona.

The women amassed 68 points, its best finish in school history.

White reached a personal-best height of 5 feet, 7 3/4 inches – fourth-best in school history.

Morena Mannucci took third place in the triple jump with a school-record leap of 39-5 3/4.

Jordan Arakawa led the EWU men with his second straight weight-throw title. He reached a distance of 66-1 1/2 – second-best in school history. The men finished in seventh place.

Idaho’s Dylan Watts won the pole vault (16-11 1/2) and Katelyn Peterson took second in the high jump (5-6 1/2) to lead the Vandals men and women. The men took 11th and the women were 12th.

• Washington State’s Abby Regan broke her own school record in the mile at the Mountain Pacific Sports Championships in Seattle.

Regan finished in 4:43.71, two-tenths of a second faster than her record-setting time two weeks ago. She finished in seventh place. She also took 15th in the 800 (2:10.74).

WSU’s Audrey Ketcham was fourth in the high jump (5-9 1/4) and Kayla Warren was fourth in the triple jump (40-5 1/2).

Dino Dodig led the Cougar men with a third-place finish in the heptathlon. He finished with 5,476 points.

Baseball

Whitworth opened its Northwest Conference schedule against Whitman (1-8, 0-5) in Walla Walla in record-setting fashion.

The Pirates (7-3, 2-0) won the doubleheader opener 8-1 before setting a school record for runs in a 29-6 win in the nightcap.

Whitworth starter Dan Scheibe was dominant in the opener, allowing a run on five hits in seven innings. He struck out 10 to improve to 3-0 on the season.

The Whitworth bats, led by Joel Condreay, were unstoppable in the nightcap. Condreay had six hits, including three doubles, and drove in five runs. Thomas Wakem added four hits and four runs and Dalton Carter drove in four more.

The Pirates scored 18 runs in the final three innings. They racked up 30 hits and scored in all but one inning.

• Ryan Kellogg settled in after giving up a home run on the first pitch he threw and No. 17 Arizona State (7-4) topped Gonzaga 5-2 at the Phoenix Classic in Phoenix.

Kellogg pitched eight innings, giving up two runs on 10 hits and improved to 3-0 on the season.

Mitchell Gunsolus gave the Bulldogs an early lead with a leadoff home run in the top of the first. GU’s Tyler Frost added a solo home run to lead off the seventh.

Gonzaga starter Andrew Sopko was tagged for five runs – two earned – on 12 hits.

The Bulldogs (5-7) open a three-game set with Tulane in New Orleans on Friday.

• Four UC Riverside (6-6) pitchers combined to shut down Washington State’s bats in the Highlanders’ 4-1 nonconference victory at Bailey-Brayton Field in Pullman.

The Cougars (6-5) managed just five hits and four walks, and left nine runners on base.

The teams will wrap up the four-game series today. First pitch is at 11.

• Community Colleges of Spokane opened the season in Longview, Washington, with a doubleheader split with Lower Columbia.

The Red Devils (1-1) won the opener 4-2 and the Sasquatch (1-1) claimed the nightcap 4-2.

In the second game, Logan Jackson hit a two-run double in the fifth and then scored on Brett Neighbors’ RBI double.

The teams play again today.

Swimming

WSU’s Nicole Proulx set a school record in the 100 freestyle on the final day of competition at the Pac-12 Swimming and Diving Championships in Federal Way, Washington.

Proulx finished in 49.75 seconds and finished 18th overall. The previous record of 49.81 was held by Rugile Mileisyte.

In the preliminary heats of the 100 freestyle, Haley Rose Love finished in 50.74 seconds, a career-best and the sixth fastest time in school history.

The Cougars finished in eighth place.

Women’s golf

Marissa Borja shot a 6-over 78 on the second and final day of the Red Rocks Invitational in Sedona, Arizona, and finished tied for 15th at 7-over 151.

She shot a 73 at Oakcreek Country Club on Friday.

The Eagles took 17th place overall and were fifth out of six Big Sky Conference teams.
