WSU completes sweep of Sacred Heart

Cameron Frost drove in three runs and Shane Matheny hit a solo home run as Washington State swept a four-game baseball series from Sacred Heart with an 8-4 win Sunday in Pullman.

Frost sparked a three-run first inning with a two-run double. WSU added three runs in the fourth with Matheny connecting to right-center for a 6-2 lead.

P.J. Jones had three hits and an RBI for the Cougars (11-5). Wes Hatten and Matheny had two hits.

Reliever Matt Bower (4-0) got the win. The Pioneers fell to 0-8.

• After two victories to open the series, Gonzaga (7-8) fell 3-0 to Tulane (12-4) in the finale at New Orleans. Joey Harris had two of the Bulldogs’ three hits. Gage Burland (0-1) took the loss.

• Whitworth’s Spencer Ansett pitched 8 1/3 innings and Joshua Davis homered and scored the winning run in the ninth in a 2-1 victory over George Fox (7-9, 5-4 Northwest Conference) in Spokane.

Davis and Paul Miller singled to lead off the ninth and a fielding error allowed Jeremy Druffel to reach first and load the bases. Joel Condreay hit a ground ball to the third baseman who overthrew home plate with Davis scoring the winning run.

Davis hit his conference-leading sixth home run for the Pirates (10-6, 4-2) in the first inning.

Ansett gave up one run on seven hits and one walk while striking out six. After Ansett gave up a pair of singles in the ninth, Carson Blumenthal (1-0) came in and faced one batter who hit into a double play.

• CC Spokane collected 25 hits in sweeping a doubleheader from the University of Calgary 11-2 and 10-2 at Shadle Park HS.

Corbin Smith picked up the win in the first game and Zach Haggett, who struck out nine in seven innings, got the victory in the second game.

Evan Douglas went 7 for 8 with two doubles, a home run and five RBIs in the two victories for CCS (6-2). Sheldon Liikala added four hits, including a double, and Logan Jackson three hits with a double and triple.

Softball

Whitworth (13-5, 6-2 Northwest Conference) split a doubleheader with Pacific Lutheran (4-8, 3-5), winning the opener in Spokane 4-3 before dropping the second game 5-2. The Pirates won three games in the four-game series.

Shannon Wessel and Tessa Matthews homered in the first-game win. Matthews’ homer broke a 3-3 tie in the sixth inning.

Wessel’s three-run homer had given Whitworth a 3-2 lead in the fifth. Madi Perez (7-2) went the distance for the win. Wessel and Chelsey Hayes had three hits each for Whitworth and Matthews two.

In the second game, Whitworth’s Kelsey Stroshine had two hits while Makayla Lefever (6-2) got the loss.

Golf

Whitworth’s women took second, three strokes back of Whitman, at the six-team Puget Sound Invitational at Gold Mountain GC in Bremerton. Chelsea Bayley was second with a two-round total 154, three strokes out of first.

Whitworth’s men were third in a seven-team field, seven strokes back of champion Pacific Lutheran. Samson Martinez was third at 148, three strokes back of the winner.
