Schultz, Parker headed to NIC Hall of Fame

From Local And Wire Reports

Dick Schultz and Doug Parker will be inducted into the North Idaho College Athletics Hall of Fame as the sixth class during a ceremony in conjunction with the school’s athletics awards banquet on April 25 in the Edminster Student Union Building on campus.

Schultz, a three-sport star in basketball, baseball and track in the mid-1960s, is considered one of the best all-around athletes in NIC sports history.

The Lakeland High School graduate was All-Region 18 in basketball and team MVP as a 6-foot-3 shooting guard, averaging 15 points per game as a sophomore. He led the Cardinals to a 26-2-1 record and regional title in the 1965-66 season. In baseball, Schultz started at shortstop and in track he excelled in the javelin, high jump and triple jump.

After graduation from NIC, Schultz played basketball for two seasons and football for one season at Washington State. He has remained in the Northwest, coaching football, basketball, baseball and golf at the high school level until his recent retirement.

Parker, a Michigan native, goes in as a contributor. He found his way to North Idaho in the late 1970s and immediately became a supporter of NIC athletics, particularly wrestling. The Coeur d’Alene businessman has attended more than 30 National Junior College Athletics Association national wrestling tournaments as well as multiple events yearly at NIC in all sports.

Parker, a six-sport athlete in high school, was first-team all-state in football. He earned a scholarship to the University of Michigan, but transferred to Central Michigan, where he started for two seasons at middle linebacker and center for a conference championship team. He is retired, but remains active in the Coeur d’Alene community.

Induction night begins with a social at 5 p.m., followed by dinner at 5:30, the athletics awards at 6 and hall of fame inductions at 6:30. Tickets are available for $30 and can be purchased at the NIC athletics department office in Post Hall.

Bruce Werner, a Spokane native who has been involved in the California community college system since the 1970s, will be inducted into the California Community College Athletic Association Hall of Fame on Wednesday (April 1) in conjunction with the organization’s annual convention in Ontario, California.

Werner, whose father, the late Dr. George Werner, was the longtime former director of activities for the Spokane School District, was a member of the first graduating class at Shadle Park High School in 1960, received his bachelor’s degree from Whitworth and a master’s from Washington State, where he also served as men’s tennis coach.

His contributions to athletics in the CCC system were many and varied before his retirement in 2004. He did his share of coaching, helped form Las Positas College in 1975, was a dean of physical education and athletics and a vice president of instruction while serving at five different campuses through the years.

Werner also helped found coaching associations, served as president of organizations, was a conference commissioner and earned yearly administrator awards. He is in the CCC athletic director and football coaches halls of fame.

Hockey

Derek Ryan’s MVP season for Örebro in the Swedish Hockey League ended in disappointment.

Ryan, the Spokane native awarded the Golden Helmet as the Most Valuable Player as voted by his peers after leading the SHL in scoring during the regular season, managed just one assist in six games as Örebro was knocked out of the playoffs in the quarterfinals by Växjö, four games to two in the best-of-seven series. He had scored 60 points in 55 regular-season games.
