College roundup: Zags blanked by No. 2 Bruins

UCLA starter James Kaprielian shut down Gonzaga through 7 2/3 innings and the second-ranked Bruins blanked the Bulldogs 3-0 in the opener of a three-game nonconference baseball series Friday in Los Angeles.

Kaprielian allowed four hits, two walks and struck out six to improve to 8-4. David Berg pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his 10th save.

Gonzaga starter Andrew Sopko allowed two earned runs in five innings. Calvin LeBrun pitched three scoreless innings in relief.

The Bruins (32-10) and Bulldogs (20-22) play again today at 2 p.m.

• Austin Rei hit two home runs and had five RBIs and Washington (24-20, 9-14) edged Oregon State 8-6 in the second game of a three-game Pac-12 series in Seattle. Oregon State (28-14, 11-9) claimed the opener 4-2 on Thursday.

The series finale is set for 7:30 tonight.

• Seven Whitworth players earned All-Northwest Conference recognition.

Catcher Joshua Davis, designated hitter Matthew Nelson, centerfielder Jeremy Druffel and starting pitcher Dan Scheibe were named to the All-NWC first team.

Closer Carson Blumenthal was a second-team selection and starting pitcher Spencer Ansett and shortstop Joel Condreay earned honorable mention.

Softball

Berkley Fisher and Sydnie Malloy hit grand slams and Community Colleges of Spokane (37-4, 23-1) swept Blue Mountain (13-27, 10-14) at Pendleton, Oregon, to clinch the East Region championship in the Northwest Athletic Conference.

The wins were Spokane’s 13th and 14th straight against conference opponents.

Lindsie Scholwinski guided CCS to a 9-1 win in the opener. She pitched all five innings, giving up a run on four hits while striking out seven. She improved to 21-0. Fisher hit her grand slam in the fifth.

In the nightcap, the Sasquatch put up 13 runs in the first three innings and cruised to a 14-0 win. Malloy hit a grand slam in a six-run third inning.

• North Idaho rallied for four runs in the fifth and beat Treasure Valley 9-7 in the opener of a nonconference doubleheader in Ontario, Oregon.

Cardinals Keku Haake and Hayley Fields had two RBIs apiece and Chloe McIntosh had three hits and scored twice.

The nightcap wasn’t as close as North Idaho (36-5) put up six runs in the second and cruised to an 11-1 five-inning win. Fields limited the Chukars (17-25) to just three hits.

Track and field

Washington State’s Celena Ward and Kyle Stevens captured javelin titles at a dual meet with Washington in Seattle.

Ward won with a throw of 146 feet, 6 inches, and Stevens reached a distance of 220-8. The meet concludes today.
