Education notebook: Ferris theater students take on bullying

The cast of Deer Park Home Link’s production of “Around the World in 80 Days,” which will open Friday.

To take a stand against bullying, Ferris High School theater students will premiere a three-part production on the subject tonight.

Ferris students identified bullying as an issue in the community and wrote three performances – “Bystander Blues”; “I Don’t Want to Talk About It”; and “Selfie” – that explore the topic.

This show is part of an event called Project Hope, which works to raise money for organizations that raise funds for and work to overcome issues within society. This year, performance proceeds will benefit Hey UGLY (Unique Gifted Lovable You), which seeks to eliminate bullying in schools.

Performances are tonight and Friday at 7 p.m. at Ferris, 3020 E. 37th Ave. Tickets are $5.

‘Around the World’ onstage at Deer Park

Deer Park Home Link students will premiere their production of “Around the World in 80 Days” Friday.

The students have added a steampunk twist to the Jules Verne classic, which tells the tale of Phileas Fogg and his valet, Jean Passepartout, as they attempt to travel around the world in 80 days on a bet.

The cast features Jacob Brown as Fogg, Ben Wilson as Passepartout, Justin Schliep as Detective Fix, Luke Wilson as the mayor, along with several other characters, Heidi Cade as Princess Aouda, Cecilia Moeller as Miss Fotherington, and Brianna Connelly as Queen Victoria.

Nickolas Moeller, Andrew Cade, Dallan Starks and Christian Skok all play British Reform Club members, while Shiloh Bergman, Grace Basta, Melody McGuire and RaeAnn Knight play narrators.

Company members include Laurel Brown, Aysia Sims, Olivia Griffin, Raven Keading, Sarah Levering, Katie Fowler and Rebecca Carlson.

Many students portray multiple characters in this production.

Performances are Friday and Saturday at 2 and 7 p.m. at Deer Park High School, 800 S. Weber Road. All shows are free, though a ticket is needed for the Saturday 7 p.m. show. Call Home Link at (509) 468-3350 for tickets.

LC students help at Bloomsday event

Lewis and Clark High School students recently volunteered at the Bloomsday Trade Show.

Students from sports and entertainment marketing, DECA, introduction to marketing, leadership, COOP, Web design, legal studies and AVID set up, organized and ran the Bloomsday Apparel booth.

It was the fifth year LC students helped at the trade show, where they learned about customer service, marketing, sales techniques, problem solving and teamwork.

Hare named to post at Cheney High School

Cheney Public Schools recently announced Gregg Hare as the new assistant principal and athletic director at Cheney High School.

Hare graduated from Whitworth University in 2007, received a master’s degree from Walden University in 2009 and has pursued his principal certification from Eastern Washington University.

Hare, who will begin in July, is currently a social studies teacher and athletic director at Mountainside Middle School.

He is replacing assistant principal and athletic director Jim Missel, who is retiring.
