After all the hoopla, Philip Rivers still No. 1 in San Diego

Associated Press

The San Diego Chargers opened OTAs on Tuesday with Philip Rivers at quarterback.

“Just like I thought I would be,” Rivers said.

Rivers is entering his 12th season and it comes on the heels of an eventful few months.

In the run-up to the NFL draft, speculation was rampant that the Chargers might trade Rivers to the Tennessee Titans for the No. 2 pick and select Oregon’s Marcus Mariota as Rivers’ replacement.

Rivers also alluded to his contract status and said it would be “awesome” if he finished his career with the Chargers.

“I’m willing to listen to anything,” he said.

Mariota adapting to huddle

Marcus Mariota never had to worry about huddling up to call plays at Oregon – he and the Ducks simply glanced to the sideline for what to run.

Now with the Titans, it’s up to Mariota to huddle up his teammates and call a play only he has received from the sideline.

“For me, learning a whole new system, I have to go over it constantly so that I know what’s going on,” Mariota said.

RG3 looks relaxed for Redskins

Robert Griffin III was noticeably more relaxed when he reported for the Redskins voluntary workouts in Ashburn, Virginia.

Maybe it has something to do with him being named Washington’s starting quarterback, or that he became a father since the season ended. Or it could be a little of both.

“Apparently, (head coach) Jay (Gruden) felt like I was the best option he had at quarterback,” said Griffin. “I’m happy about that.”

Extra Points

Antonio Brown hardly looked like a guy ready to hold out for more money. The three-time Pro Bowler insisted he has no plans to get into a contract showdown with the Steelers even after questions surfaced during the offseason about whether he would skip training camp in hopes of landing a raise. “I’ll be there at training camp so you guys get ready to see me,” Brown said with a smile. …Former Ravens DT Terrence Cody has been assigned an August court date in his felony animal cruelty and misdemeanor drug charge case. Cody was arrested in February after being indicted for allegedly torturing and causing the death of his bullmastiff.
