Kamloops erases 4-0 deficit, beat Chiefs in overtime

KAMLOOPS, British Columbia — Kamloops scored two power-play goals in the third period and Collin Shirley’s goal early in overtime gave the Blazers a 5-4 win over the Spokane Chiefs in a Western Hockey League game on Tuesday.

The loss snapped Spokane’s three-game road win streak.

The Chiefs had complete control early. Dominic Zwerger scored in the first period and Adam Helewka, Luke Harrison and Zwerger scored second-period goals to put Spokane ahead 4-0, but Kamloops responded.

Nick Chyzowski and Matt Needham scored in the second period to cut the deficit to 4-2, and Gage Quinney and Ryan Rehill scored power-play goals in the third to send it to overtime.

Shirley’s game-winner was his eighth goal of the season.

Chiefs’ goaltender Matt Berlin stopped 19 of 24 shots and Tyson Verhelst stopped all four shots he faced in just less than 24 minutes of action.

Spokane fell to 7-7-2-1 and remain in second place in the WHL’s U.S. division. The Chiefs are two points behind division-leading Seattle. Kamloops improved to 6-8-0-0.
