State cross country glance
When: Saturday
Where: Sun Willows Golf Course, Pasco
4A BOYS (2:30)
Lewis and Clark probably has the best chance to challenge for a trophy (top four). The Tigers’ Zak Kindl should challenge for a top 10 finish. Top-ranked Tahoma and No. 2 Eisenhower are the favorites.
4A GIRLS (1:00)
LC and Central Valley have staged two neck-and-neck races in league and regionals and that shouldn’t change at state. LC is ranked third and CV fifth. They’ll be in the hunt for trophies. Top ranked Camas should cruise to a title. LC’s Katie Thronson and Abby Smith, both sophomores, will contend for the top 10.
3A BOYS (2:00)
A 10th straight state title for North Central would mean it stands alone. The Indians would break the record set by former Mead coach Pat Tyson’s teams. While the Indians run mostly as a pack, senior Justin Janke will be the individual most are chasing. He wants to continue what Tanner Anderson did the last two years – win a state title.
3A GIRLS (12:30)
Mt. Spokane was ranked second in the final poll and would have given Ballard a run for the title. But the Wildcats finished a point out of qualifying at regionals. Senior Micaela Kostecka will carry the Wildcats’ colors well. She’ll challenge for a state title.
2A BOYS (1:30)
Sehome is the NC of 2A. That sums it up concisely. West Valley will have to have a fantastic day to be in the mix for a trophy.
2A GIRLS (11:00)
Sehome, like the boys, is the heavy favorite. Pullman hopes to contend for a trophy. East Valley’s Brittany Aquino will challenge for a state title.
1A BOYS (12:00)
Deer Park hopes to continue what Medical Lake started a couple of years ago. The Stags are ranked No. 1 followed by No. 2 Lakeside. Medical Lake is fifth. The NEA will be well represented.
1A GIRLS (10:30)
Deer Park, Lakeside and Riverside are ranked third, fourth and fifth respectively. And a handful of Stags, Eagles and Rams will be early finishers for sure.
2B/1B BOYS (11:30)
Northwest Christian, ranked third, doesn’t appear to have the legs to challenge the school with the same name from Lacey. NWC’s Jack Ammon will challenge for a title.
2B/1B GIRLS (10:00)
St. George’s Madison Ward and Marika Morelan will challenge for state titles. No area team will contend for a state title.
