Chiefs rout Americans 8-1

KENNEWICK — Spokane goaltender Matt Berlin secured his first Western Hockey League victory and the Chiefs reached a season-high in goals in an 8-1 victory over the Tri-City Americans at the Toyota Center.

Spokane wrapped up its six-game road trip with four wins and two losses.

Evan Fiala opened the scoring for the Chiefs midway through the first period and Spokane blew it open with four second-period goals coming from Custis Miske, Dominic Zwerger, Jacob Cardiff and Adam Helewka.

Spokane’s Nik Anderson scored twice in the third period and the Chiefs’ Keanu Yamamota capped the scoring late in the game.

Miske also had two assists to finish with a career-high three points. Spokane improved to 3-0 against Tri-City (6-10-1-0) this season.

Berlin stopped 25 of 26 shots. The Americans’ lone goal came from Parker Bowles on a power-play in the second period.

Spokane improved to 8-7-2-1. They have 19 points, two behind U.S. Division-leading Seattle.

The Chiefs host Everett Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. at the Arena.
