Prep roundup: Mead tops CV in regional volleyball title match

Maddie Lee had 13 kills and Sarah Absalonson added 32 assists and six aces as Mead secured the top seed to the state tournament with a five-set victory over Central Valley in the 4A regional title match Saturday at Mead. Scores were 25-20, 21-25, 25-12, 24-26 and 15-10.

The Bears claimed the second seed to state.

Payton Douglass added 28 digs for the Panthers, who also had a five-set win over Central Valley in the district title match on Oct. 31.

The Bears were led by Sydney Johnson, who had 12 kills, and Jade Rockwood, who had 34 assists and three aces.

University claimed the third and final seed to state with a 25-20, 20-25, 25-20, 22-25, 15-11 win over Richland.

The State 4A tournament will be held Friday and next Saturday at the Toyota Center in Kennewick.

3A

Adrienne Dotson had 14 kills and Kelly Brown added 23 assists and three aces as Mt. Spokane claimed the top seed to the state tournament with a 25-19, 27-25, 25-18 win over Kamiakin in the 3A regional championship match in Kennewick.

Kamiakin went on to beat Shadle Park 25-22, 25-17, 25-22 to claim the second and final seed to state, which will be held Friday and next Saturday at the Toyota Center in Kennewick.

2A

Melissa Langerveld had 13 kills, 23 digs and three aces to help Pullman sweep Prosser 25-22, 27-25 and 25-17 in a 2A subregional match in Pullman.

The win gave the Greyhounds a berth to the State 2A tournament, which will be held Friday and next Saturday at St. Martin’s University in Lacey, Washington.

District 7 1A

Lakeside responded after dropping the first two sets and beat Freeman in the District 7 1A title match at Freeman. Scores were 18-25, 17-25, 25-23, 25-23 and 15-13.

Lexi Mikkelsen had 20 kills and Lindsay Keck added 29 digs for the Eagles, who earned the top seed to the state tournament.

Freeman went on to play Newport and beat the Grizzlies 25-23, 25-19 and 25-23 to claim the second and final seed to state.

The State 1A tournament will be held Friday and next Saturday at the Yakima SunDome in Yakima.

2B

Carmen Gfeller and Olivia Mellor had 11 kills apiece and Ashtyn Aune added 14 assists as Colfax swept Tri-Cities Prep in the 2B regional title match in Asotin. Scores were 25-17, 25-21 and 25-18.

The Bulldogs claimed the top seed to the state tournament. Tri-Cities Prep is the second seed.

The State 2B tournament is Friday and next Saturday at the Yakima SunDome.

District 7 1B

Emma Dingman had 11 kills, six blocks and two aces to lead Almira/Coulee-Hartline to a 25-9, 25-19, 25-9 win over Cusick in the District 7 1B title match at Northwest Christian.

The win gave the Warriors the top seed to the State 1B tournament, which will be held Friday and next Saturday at the Yakima SunDome in Yakima.

Odessa-Harrington claimed the second and final seed to state with a 25-11, 25-20, 25-20 win over Cusick. Lanessa Simon had 13 kills and Katie DeWulf added 14 assists and four aces for the Titans.

Odessa-Harrington beat Republic and Valley Christian earlier in the day.

District 9 1B

Pomeroy claimed the top seed to state with a five-set win over Oakesdale in the District 9 1B title match at Colfax. Scores were 20-25, 25-16, 25-19, 26-28 and 15-9.

Oakesdale claimed the second and final seed to state with a 25-23, 25-18, 25-16 win over Colton. Jacey Johnson had 18 kills and Maddy Shrope added 32 assists for the Nighthawks.

Colton made it to the play-in match with wins over Touchet and St. John-Endicott earlier in the day.

Girls soccer

Gonzaga Prep secured the top seed to the state tournament with a shootout victory over Chiawana in the 4A regional title match in Spokane.

The Bullpups (15-2) scored eight shootout goals and the Riverhawks scored seven. Neither team scored in regulation or the two overtime periods.

Ferris (10-8) nabbed the third and final seed to state with a 2-0 win over University. Sydney Clements and Bria Bowton scored second-half goals for the Saxons.

The State 4A tournament starts on Monday.

3A

Kamiakin claimed the second and final seed to the State 3A tournament with a 3-0 win over Mt. Spokane (11-6) in a regional match at Spokane Falls Community College.

2A

East Valley (14-3) and Clarkston claimed state berths with 2A subregional wins.

Skylar Bastin scored twice to lead East Valley past visiting Ephrata 5-0. Chloe Gellhaus added a goal and an assist for the Knights.

Clarkston slid past East Valley (Yakima) 2-1 in Yakima. Taylen Wohl and Makinzie Packwood scored first-half goals for the Bantams.

The State 2A tournament starts on Monday.

Football

St. Maries was eliminated from the State 2A playoffs after a 13-0 quarterfinal loss to Aberdeen in Aberdeen, Idaho.
