S-R favors incumbents

In a Nov. 1 letter, Stella McDonald points to the poor legislative record of Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers over the years and asks, “Will The Spokesman-Review still endorse her in 2016, as the newspaper has every term, even though she does absolutely nothing for the people in her district?”

I agree that she is a mediocre legislator who, despite her seniority, has exhibited hardly any constructive leadership in the House of Representatives. But I fear the answer to the question is affirmative.

After more than 38 years of reading our local daily newspaper, the trend I’ve noticed is that it tends to endorse incumbents over challengers, regardless of party affiliation and the quality of their service up to that point.
