Fresh Sheet: Tilth Producers coming to town

Tilth Producers of Washington is hosting its annual conference in Spokane this weekend.

This year’s theme is Building Tilth: Fields, Farmers and Community. It takes place Friday through Sunday at the Spokane Convention Center.

The keynote speaker John Reganold, a renowned organic agriculture educator and soil scientist at Washington State University. The conference also features a tradeshow and 25 workshops on topics from specialty crop production and livestock management to soil fertility and marketing strategies.

Formed in 1974, Tilth Producers “promotes ecologically sound, economically viable and socially equitable farming practices that improve the health of our communities and natural environment,” according to its website.

Seeing gold

Bridge Press Cellars and Barrister Winery recently won gold medals at the Great Northwest Wine Invitational Competition.

Barrister won gold/best in class for its 2012 Cabernet Franc, which sells for $31. Barrister also won gold for its $22 NV Rough Justice X. Bridge Press won gold for its 2011 Merlot, which costs $25 and was recently chosen as Wine of the Week by Great Northwest Wine, which conducts the competition.

Entries were nominated by a panel of regional wine professionals, including Naomi Boutz, manager and wine director of The Cellar at 317 Sherman in Coeur d’Alene.

The third annual competition, held at the Columbia Gorge Hotel in Hood River, Oregon, included 561 wines.

Goldendale-based Maryhill Winery, whose owners Craig and Vicki Leuthold maintain a home in Spokane, also won three gold medals.

Free meals for veterans

and military personnel

In honor of Veteran’s Day today, Ivar’s Seafood Bars are providing lunches or dinners and participating IHOP restaurants are offering Red, White and Blue pancakes for free for U.S. military veterans and active-duty military members.

The stack of buttermilk pancakes is topped with glazed strawberries, blueberry compote and whipped topping. The giveaway is from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Ivar’s is offering Clams ‘n Chips, Baby Prawns and Chips, three-piece Fish ‘n Chips, Shrimp Caesar Salad and a Clam Chowder Bread Bowl during regular business hours.

Veterans and active-duty military members must show proof of military service.
