Mead man charged with homicide in crash that killed passenger

A Mead man faces a vehicular homicide charge after he was involved in a car crash that left a passenger dead early Sunday morning.

Ryan D. Greenwood, 23, also of Mead, was killed when the 2002 Subaru Impreza crashed shortly before 4 a.m. on U.S. Route 2 and Deer Road about 4 miles north of Spokane, the Washington State Patrol said.

The driver, 23-year-old William A. Nauert, was injured and taken to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center, the WSP said.

Nauert was driving north on the highway at high speed when he lost control of the car, which spun off the roadway to the east, rolled down an embankment and came to rest on its top, investigators said.

The WSP said drugs or alcohol were involved in the crash.

Both men were wearing seat belts.
