Men’s basketball: Whitworth holds off each Caltech rally

Kenny Love scored 19 points and George Valle added 15 points and nine rebounds Friday to carry third-ranked Whitworth (2-0) to an 80-58 victory over visiting Caltech in nonconference play at the Whitworth Fieldhouse.

Whitworth built a 42-23 halftime lead, but the Beavers (1-1) opened the second half with a 14-3 run to pull within eight points. The Pirates pushed the lead back to 16 points, but Caltech pulled within nine with 8 minutes, 17 seconds to play.

Whitworth outscored Caltech 20-7 down the stretch.

The Pirates outrebounded the Beavers 43-33 and shot 30 of 66 from the field. Whitworth struggled (6 of 28) on 3-point shooting.

Nassar Al-Rayes had 19 points and six rebound to lead Caltech.

North Idaho 86, Pierce 63: Braian Angola-Rodas scored 20 points, hitting 8 of 16 from the floor, and added a game-high 12 rebounds to guide the visiting Cardinals (5-0) past the Raiders (0-1) in nonconference play at Lakewood, Washington.

Brayon Blake added 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Cardinals, who shot 32 of 70 from the field. NIC outrebounded Pierce 52-29.

CC Spokane 133, Alumni 86: Dalton Patchen scored 22 points, hitting 5 of 6 on 3-pointers, and added nine rebounds and six assists as the Sasquatch raced away from their alumni at Spokane Community College.

Garrett Hull, in his first collegiate game, had 11 points, nine rebounds and nine assists for the Sasquatch.
