Volleyball: NIC loses, takes 10th at nationals

Jai Chapman had 18 kills and 14 digs as the Hutchinson volleyball team topped North Idaho in five sets in the consolation final at the NJCAA National Championships Saturday in Casper, Wyoming. Scores were 25-17, 23-25, 25-19, 14-25 and 15-11.

Hutchinson (34-9), which closed out the match with a 6-2 run, took ninth place and the Cardinals (22-16) were 10th.

Penny Gwynn had 14 kills and nine digs, Brenna Meehan had 13 kills and eight digs and Brooke Bell had nine kills and nine blocks for NIC.

Gonzaga falls to Pacific in five sets

Lexi Elman had 18 kills and 10 digs and Kimmy Whitson added 48 assists, 11 digs and eight blocks as Pacific (17-11, 8-9) withstood Gonzaga’s comeback attempt and beat the Bulldogs in five sets in a West Coast Conference match in Stockton, California. Scores were 25-20, 25-23, 23-25, 18-25 and 15-12.

Savannah Blinn had a match-high 21 kills and Emmy Allen added 16 kills and 16 digs for Gonzaga.

The Bulldogs (15-15, 6-11) wrap up the regular season Monday at Portland.
