Around the remote: Chuck Barney’s picks for the week of Nov. 29

Tribune News Service

DON’T MISS: “The Wiz Live!” – It’s time to ease on down the yellow brick road as another live stage spectacular comes to television. This adaptation of the 1975 acclaimed Broadway musical arrives stuffed with well-known personalities, including Queen Latifah, Mary J. Blige, Ne-Yo, David Alan Grier, Common and Amber Riley. But the coveted role of Dorothy went to Shanice Williams, an ultra-talented 19-year-old newcomer. 8 p.m. Thursday, NBC.

Other bets

SUNDAY: It’s the midseason finale of “The Walking Dead” and that usually means someone is going to bite it. We expect the body count to rise, or a crazy cliffhanger, or both. 9 p.m., AMC.

SUNDAY: In the new TV film “The Christmas Gift,” Michelle Trachtenberg stars as a driven journalist who sets out in search of the person who gave her a life-changing Secret Santa gift. That’s fine with us, as long as she makes deadline. 9 p.m., Lifetime.

MONDAY: On “It’s Your 50th Christmas, Charlie Brown,” Kristen Bell salutes the yuletide special that has been warming hearts and endorsing scrawny trees since 1965. Other performers include Kristin Chenoweth, Matthew Morrison and Sarah McLachlan. 8 p.m., ABC.

MONDAY: America Ferrera (“Ugly Betty”) returns to prime time in “Superstore.” It’s a workplace comedy about a bunch of goofball employees at a big box store. 8 p.m., NBC.

TUESDAY: Laugh and call him names all you want, but “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” still makes for a holly-jolly Christmas special after all these years. Even Bumbles know that. 8 p.m., CBS.

TUESDAY: Producers are promising some turbocharged action as “The Flash” again mingles with “Arrow” in a special crossover event that sets the stage for their midseason spin-off “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.” The fun starts on “The Flash” and continues Wednesday on “Arrow.” 8 p.m., The CW.

WEDNESDAY: “Racing Extinction” is an alarming – and vital – documentary that examines how humanity has sparked a “cataclysmic change” of the world’s natural environment and animal life. Is it too late to stop the damage? 9 p.m., Discovery Channel.

WEDNESDAY: California here they come as “Top Chef” launches a 13th season that will have the foodies competing in six cities across the Golden State. We open with a challenge held under the Hollywood sign. 10 p.m., Bravo.

THURSDAY: It’s a holiday hoedown on “CMA Country Christmas.” Jennifer Nettles and her pals belt out seasonal songs at the historic Grand Ole Opry House. 9 p.m., ABC.

FRIDAY: “Marc Maron: More Later” is a new stand-up special that showcases the cynical humor of the comedian, actor, author and podcaster. Maron discusses, among other topics, religion, relationships, rage and Skype sex. 10 p.m., Epix.

SATURDAY: In the new holiday movie “The Flight Before Christmas,” Mayim Bialik and Ryan McPartlin play polar opposites forced to share a room at a small-town inn after a snowstorm diverts their airplane. 8 p.m., Lifetime.
