Area roundup: Alysha Overland scores four goals to lead CC Spokane to victory

Alysha Overland finished with four goals and one assist Wednesday to guide Community Colleges of Spokane to a 10-1 win over host Yakima Valley in Northwest Athletic Association women’s soccer at Pasco.

Sarah Melvin (University High) added three goals and two assists for the Sasquatch (8-0-1, 5-0-0), who lead the East Division by six points over Walla Walla.

Erica Simpson (Post Falls) scored twice for CCS, which has won eight consecutive matches since a season-opening tie against Lane CC.

The Yaks are 5-2-2, 1-2-1.

• Jasmine Smith and Emily Aspen scored during the first seven minutes, but North Idaho (3-3-3, 1-1-2 NWAC) settled for a 2-all tie against host Treasure Valley (5-6-2, 2-3-2) at Ontario, Oregon.

The Chukars tied the match on Merhaweet Sahlezghi’s goal at 31 minutes.

Men’s soccer

Mario Zarate contributed one goal and one assist as CC Spokane (5-3-2, 3-2-1 NWAC) unleashed four second-half goals in a span of 28 minutes for a 4-0 win over host Columbia Basin (3-5-1, 2-4-0) at Pasco.

• Hamidou Kante scored at 10 and 77 minutes and assisted on Jorge Carmona’s goal as North Idaho (5-3-2, 3-1-2 NWAC) held on for a 3-2 win over host Treasure Valley (4-6-1, 1-4-1) at Ontario, Oregon.

Football

The Spokane Shock added defensive back Lorenzo Waters (Rutgers) to their roster in preparation for the 2016 Indoor Football League season.

Basketball

Eastern Washington’s women were selected sixth by the media and ninth by coaches in the Big Sky Conference preseason poll.

Idaho was tabbed sixth by coaches and eighth by the media.

Montana is the top choice in both polls, followed by North Dakota and Sacramento State.
