VICTORIA, British Columbia — Dominic Zwerger scored the eventual game-winner with 1.2 seconds left in the second period, Kailer Yamamoto added to his Western Hockey League assists lead, and the Spokane Chiefs topped the Victoria Royals 3-1.
Spokane’s Hudson Elynuik scored twice. His first goal came just more than 2 minutes into the contest. His second goal was an empty-neater with less than a minute left in the third.
For Zwerger, it was the third straight game in which he has scored and the fourth straight game with a point.
Spokane goalkeeper Tyson Verhelst stopped 33 of 34 shots, including all 13 in the final period. Victoria, despite a 34-28 shot advantage, was limited to Dante Hannoun’s power-play goal in the second period.
Yamamoto assisted on two of Spokane’s goals. He is the WHL’s assists leader with eight on the season.
The win moved the Chiefs to 3-1-0-0 on the season. They play Victoria (4-1-0-0) again tonight at 7:05 p.m.
Following tonight’s game, Spokane has two more road games − against Portland on Friday and against Everett on Saturday − before returning home for five games.
