Hunter dies from gunshot wound in North Idaho

A hunter died Monday evening after accidentally shooting himself in the chest in Murray, Idaho, the Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office said.

Stephen Davis, 60, a Florida resident with a second home in Murray, suffered a gunshot wound to the chest shortly before 7 p.m. and died at the scene on Prichard Creek Road, Sheriff Mitch Alexander said.

Davis had been wearing a .44 magnum revolver in a shoulder holster prior to the shooting. He was with a group of family and friends who had finished hunting for the day and were in the process of clearing their weapons, the sheriff said.

“The victim was on the back steps to the residence taking his shoes off when the others heard a shot,” Alexander said. “They went out to find his revolver on the ground and him, shot in the chest.”

The others provided first aid until emergency services arrived. Northwest Medstar was called to the scene. Davis succumbed to his injuries by 7:47 p.m., the sheriff said.

Prichard/Murray Volunteer Fire and Medical also responded to the were scene.
