Spokane police officers who shot Hillyard suspect named

The three officers who shot and wounded a domestic violence suspect in Hillyard early Monday morning were Senior Officer Christopher McMurtrey and Officers Joseph Matt and Stanley Stadelman, the Spokane Police Department said Thursday.

The officers shot Jason M. Smith, 36, outside a home at 4118 E. Longfellow Ave. after he allegedly ignored officer commands to get out of his truck and drove into patrol cars.

McMurtrey is also a certified EMT and provided medical aid at the scene, police said. Smith was transported to a local hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. He has been charged with assault and domestic violence charges.

The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the shooting as part of the Spokane Investigative Regional Response network.
