100 years ago in the region: UI cancels football season; Jury deadlocks in murder trial for founder of Cusick

From our archives,100 years ago

Football was canceled at both the University of Idaho and Moscow High School for the remainder of the season.

The town was still reeling from the death of Idaho football player Chauncey Lyman during a practice session and the death of a Grangeville High School student in a game at Nez Perce.

From the war beat: A large advertisement announced “Horses Wanted for the English Army.” A horse-buyer representing a large Midwest firm was at the Spokane Hotel, purchasing horses to send overseas. The ad specified “good, blocky, rugged-built horses, weighing from 1,150 pounds up, and from five to nine years old.”

From the trial beat: The jury in the Capt. J.W. Cusick murder trial failed to reach a verdict after deliberating for two days.

Cusick, who founded the town of Cusick, had been charged with shooting Harry Kilburn in a violent confrontation on the dark streets of Cusick.

The jury was discharged and a new trial was scheduled during the next jury term in Newport.
