Overview: The Pirates hit the road for the biggest game of the Rod Sandberg era. The winner of this game likely will be crowned the Northwest Conference champion. The Pirates are off to their best start since 2006 when they started 10-0. But, they face a Wildcats team that just clinched the 60th consecutive winning season, a streak that dates back to 1956 and is the best such streak for any football program at any collegiate level. The Pirates have raced to good starts, outscoring opponents 152-10 in the first half this season. However, the Wildcats rarely have been challenged. They have outscored conference opponents 199-17 this season. The key for Whitworth will be to protect quarterback Ian Kolste long enough to find open receivers. The Pirates’ offensive line faces first-team All-American defensive end Alex Hoff, who leads the league in sacks and tackles for loss. On defense, the Pirates have only given up 11 points per contest and must find a way to slow the Wildcats’ offense, which averages a league-best 520.2 yards and 59 points a game.
