Big Sky roundup: Portland State edges Cal Poly 38-35

Alex Kuresa accounted for four touchdowns and Jonathan Gonzales kicked a 27-yard field goal with 33 seconds left to lift Portland State past Cal Poly 38-35 Saturday night in San Luis Obispo, California.

Kuresa completed 16 of 25 passes for 232 yards and two touchdowns and added 101 yards rushing and two more scores. Gonzales added field goals of 35 and 36 yards in the first quarter. Touchdown runs of 40 and 15 yards – less than three minutes apart – by Kuresa gave Portland State (6-1, 3-1) a 28-21 lead with 3:57 left in the third quarter.

Cal Poly (2-5, 1-3) tied it 2 1/2 minutes later when wide receiver Kory Fox hit Kyle Lewis for a 57-yard touchdown. Kuresa hit Trent Riley for a 13-yard score on the Vikings’ next possession.

Lewis scored on a 29-yard run to tie it with 2:34 to play, setting up Gonzales’ kick to win it.

Montana 42, North Dakota 16: Makena Simis threw for 321 yards and a school record-tying six touchdowns, and Grizzlies (4-3, 3-1) routed North Dakota (4-4, 2-3) in Missoula.

Montana State 63, East Tennessee State 7: Dakota Prukop threw for 226 yards and three touchdowns before leaving early in the third quarter as the Bobcats (4-3) routed the Buccaneers (0-7) in a nonconference game in Bozeman, Montana.

Northern Arizona 52, Weber State 36: Case Cookus thew for 353 yards and four touchdowns as the Lumberjacks (4-3, 2-2) held off the Wildcats (4-4, 3-2) in Flagstaff, Arizona.

Southern Utah 34, UC Davis 6: Ammon Olsen threw two touchdown passes and ran for another to lead the Thunderbirds (5-2, 4-0) to a victory over the Aggies (1-7, 1-4) in Davis, California. Southern Utah has won five straight and are tied with Eastern Washington atop the conference.

Sacramento State 38, Idaho State 13: Nate Ketteringham threw four touchdown passes, three to Shane Harrison, and the Hornets (2-6, 1-4) beat the Bengals (2-5, 1-3) in Sacramento, California.
