Chiefs top Rebels 3-1

RED DEER, Alberta — Spokane scored three first-period goals and goaltender Tyson Verhelst stopped 45 of 46 shots as the Chiefs topped the Red Deer Rebels 3-1 in a Western Hockey League game on Friday night.
Jason Fram opened the scoring at 5:25 of the first period and Riley Whittingham made it 2-0 just more than 6 minutes later. Both goals came on power plays.
Kailer Yamamoto made it 3-0 with a goal in the final minute of the first period.
The Rebels (10-5-0-0) had a commanding 46-23 shot advantage, but could only get one past Verhelst. Colton Bobyk scored Red Deer’s lone goal on a powerplay midway through the third period.
The Chiefs improved to 6-7-1-1 and remain tied with Portland for second place in the U.S. Division. Spokane plays at Edmonton in Edmonton, Alberta, on Sunday.
