Volleyball: Eastern Washington wins, earns tournament bid

The Eastern Washington volleyball team clinched a spot in the Big Sky Conference tournament for the first time in four years with a come-from-behind win over Montana State Friday at Reese Court in Cheney. Scores were 22-25, 26-24, 23-25, 25-15 and 15-13.

The Eagles’ Allie Schumacher had a match-high 23 kills and Alexis Wesley and Jessica Gilbert each added 11. Additionally, Nicole Rigoni had 38 assists and Ryann Ensrud added 27 digs.

Natalee Godfrey led the Bobcats (3-17, 1-11) with 15 kills.

EWU (14-9, 9-3) has four regular-season matches left. The Eagles play Northern Arizona in their home finale on Thursday.

No. 8 UCLA hands WSU fourth-straight loss

Claire Felix had 20 kills and Izzy Carmona added 16 kills and 10 digs as No. 8 UCLA (18-3, 9-2) beat Washington State 25-13, 25-20, 23-25, 25-16 in a Pac-12 Conference match in Pullman.

The loss was the Cougars’ fourth straight.

WSU’s Kyra Holt had 11 kills and 17 digs and Haley MacDonald dished out 40 assists. The Cougars (14-9, 3-8) host Southern California on Sunday.

Fifth-ranked Huskies sweep top-ranked USC

Scambray had 13 kills and 12 digs and Tanner added 13 kills and 16 assists as No. 5 Washington swept No. 1 Southern California (22-1, 10-1) in a Pac-12 Conference match in Seattle. Scores were 26-24, 25-21 and 25-15.

The Huskies (19-2, 9-2) host UCLA on Sunday.

Pirates win seventh straight

Brenna Bruil and Cassandra Mendoza had 11 kills apiece and Whitworth extended its winning streak to seven matches with a straight-set win over Pacific (8-13, 5-8) in a Northwest Conference match in Spokane. Scores were 25-15, 25-17 and 25-14.

The Pirates’ Maddye Dinsmore dished out 34 assists and Mallorie Schoesler added 18 digs.

Whitworth has three remaining regular season matches. The Pirates (17-6, 11-2) play their home-finale Saturday against Linfield. A win would clinch at least a share of the NWC title and the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

CCS sweeps Southern Nevada

Community Colleges of Spokane swept Southern Nevada (2-24) in a nonconference match at Spokane Falls Community College. Scores were 25-23, 25-19 and 25-23.

The Sasquatch (21-25) host Wenatchee Valley on Wednesday at SFCC.

Cardinals top Badgers

North Idaho (10-11, 8-3) beat Snow (11-17, 6-6) in a Scenic West Athletic Conference match in Coeur d’Alene. Scores were 25-19, 25-19, 18-25 and 25-18.

The win was the Cardinals’ fourth straight.
