13-year-olds being phased out of Little League

Little League said Thursday it is changing its age requirement, phasing out 13-year-olds from its major division, which plays its World Series at South Williamsport, Pennsylvania. It is changing its “age determination date” to Aug. 31, which will prevent anyone who turns 13 during the season from playing in the major division, beginning in 2018. The current birthdate cutoff of April 30 will remain in effect in 2016 and 2017 for players born on or before Aug. 31, 2005. Officials say the move will bring its registration in line with most school districts, allowing more kids to play with classmates. Little League has programs for ages 4-18. – AP
