College roundup: Gonzaga volleyball posts two sweeps

The Gonzaga volleyball team claimed straight-set wins over Grand Canyon (1-7) and Niagara (2-6) at the Grand Canyon Invitational Friday in Phoenix.

McKayla Ferris had 15 kills and Savannah Blinn added 10 in GU’s 25-13, 25-23, 25-21 win over Grand Canyon. The Bulldogs (6-2) then went on to beat Niagara 25-12, 25-10 and 25-16.

• Washington State (7-1) swept Morehead State (2-7) and Ball State (4-5) at the Cougar Challenge in Pullman.

The Cougars opened with a 25-19, 25-19, 25-15 win over Morehead State.

In their second match, Kyra Holt had 15 kills and eight digs and McKenna Woodford added 11 kills as WSU topped Ball State 25-22, 25-22, 25-20.

• Adlee Van Winden had a match-high 15 kills and Cal Poly (6-1) topped Idaho (1-6) 25-14, 24-26, 25-19, 25-20 at the Portland tournament.

• San Diego State (2-6) swept Eastern Washington (4-5) 25-16, 25-18, 25-15 at the Hawaii Challenge in Honolulu.

• Whitworth claimed straight-set wins over Cornell College (3-4) and DePauw (3-3) on the opening day of the Baden Invitational in St. Louis. The Pirates (5-2) opened with a 25-17, 25-17, 25-10 win over Cornell. Nicole Leonard and Brenna Bruil had 12 kills apiece to guide Whitworth.

In their second match, Cassandra Mendoza had 11 kills and Nicole Leonard added 10 kills and 11 digs as the Pirates swept DePauw 25-20, 25-13 and 25-22.

• North Idaho lost twice at a tournament in Twin Falls, Idaho. The Cardinals opened with a five-set loss to Southern Idaho. Scores were 25-17, 17-25, 25-19, 22-25 and 15-5. NIC’s Brenna Meehan had a match-high 16 kills.

The Cardinals then lost 25-17, 25-21, 22-25, 25-21 to Chemeketa.

Men’s soccer

Jamie O’Grady’s breakaway goal in double overtime gave Hartwick (New York) a 2-1 win over Gonzaga in a nonconference match in Spokane.

The winner came following Graison Le’s line-drive goal in the 90th minute that brought the Bulldogs (2-2-1) even with the Hawks (2-1-2) at 1 apiece.

Women’s soccer

Cara Wegner scored in the 88th minute, giving host Washington State (5-0) a 2-1 win over Oklahoma State (2-4). WSU’s other goal – by Kourtney Guetlein – came in the second minute.

• Karley Baggerly scored an unassisted goal in the 72nd minute and Gonzaga (1-2-3) played to a 1-all draw with visiting Cal State Fullerton (6-0-1).

• Alyssa Lloyd and Olivia Baggerly scored first-half goals and Idaho (3-3) blanked Arkansas State (2-5) 2-0 in Memphis, Tennessee.

• Chloe Williams scored her fourth goal of the season in double overtime and Eastern Washington (4-1-1) clipped Valparaiso (2-3-1) 2-1 in a nonconference match in Valparaiso, Indiana.

Williams also assisted on Allison Raniere’s 60th-minute goal.

• Kourtney Kingsmore’s 79th-minute goal lifted Chapman (2-1) past Whitworth (2-1) 2-1 at the SlugFest Tournament in Santa Cruz, California.

Kingsmore’s goal came 21 seconds after Whitworth’s Sara Mickelson tied the match at 1.
