Area roundup: Gonzaga senior Sean Walsh wins Saint Mary’s golf invite

Gonzaga senior Sean Walsh shot a final-round, 5-under-par 66 on Wednesday to win the Saint Mary’s Invitational at Poppy Hills Golf Club in Pebble Beach, California.

Walsh completed the three rounds at 5-under 208 for a two-shot victory over Jonathan De Los Reye and Pavan Sagoo, both of the host Gaels.

San Diego State (851) won the team title by four strokes over the host Gaels. Washington State (895) placed 11th and GU (898) finished 12th.

Sophomore Derek Bayley (Lakeland High) led WSU, tying for 23rd at 219.

Women’s soccer

Chloe Williams scored in the 19th minute and Eastern Washington (6-1-1) recorded its first shutout of the season during a 1-0 nonconference win over Illinois-Chicago (2-6-1) at Chicago.

Williams scored for the fourth consecutive match and has seven goals this season. Eastern has won four consecutive matches for the first time in program history.

• Danielle Wieck scored on a penalty kick in the 78th minute as visiting Whitman (1-4-0 overall) defeated Whitworth (2-3-0) to open Northwest Conference play.

Whitman outshot the Pirates 14-12. Whitworth’s Andrea Stump had three saves.

• Maddy Boyd scored three times within 10 minutes to power visiting Community Colleges of Spokane (6-0-1, 3-0-0 Northwest Athletic Conference) to a 9-1 victory over Wenatchee Valley (1-4-0, 0-3-0).

Alysha Overland added two goals and Erica Simpson had one goal and two assists for the Sasquatch.

Men’s soccer

Jonathan Cortez scored at 80 minutes to give CC Spokane (3-2-1, 1-1-0 NWAC) a 2-1 victory at Wenatchee Valley (2-2-0, 0-2-0).

Breno Rocha assisted on the winning goal. After the Knights scored in the first minute, CCS got the equalizer from Eric Sanchez-Flores at 10 minutes.

• Hamidou Kante scored at 76 and 89 minutes to rally North Idaho (4-2-0, 2-0-0 NWAC) to a 3-2 victory over visiting Columbia Basin (2-2-1, 1-1-0).

Kante also assisted on Jacob Kraut’s goal at 51 minutes to tie the match at 1.

Volleyball

CC Spokane (7-11) opened NWAC play with a 25-9, 25-17, 25-16 sweep over Yakima Valley (1-7, 0-2) at Spokane Falls CC.
