Football roundup: LRS gets bit of revenge

It wasn’t exactly pretty, but Lind-Ritzville/Sprague got the revenge it was looking for on Friday night.

Broncos quarterback Bryce Esser threw his third touchdown of the game, a 27-yarder to Damien Rouleau, with nine minutes left in the fourth quarter and LRS held on to beat Okanogan 28-21 in a nonleague game in Ritzville.

It was Okanogan who ended the Broncos’ 38-game winning streak with a 34-0 victory in last year’s State 2B semifinals. The Bulldogs went on to claim the state title with a 17-14 win over Napavine.

In this one, Lind-Ritzville/Sprague (3-0) took control early. After a 72-yard touchdown connection from Clay Ashworth to Mason Guerrette gave Okanogan a 7-0 lead, the Broncos scored the next three touchdowns to take a 21-7 lead into the half.

Alan Field started the rally with an 88-yard kickoff return for a score in the first quarter and then Esser threw two touchdown passes in the second – one to Dylan Becker and the other to Field.

The Bulldogs knotted the game at 21 with two scores in the third, but Rouleau’s touchdown reception in the fourth capped the scoring.

The Broncos managed just 145 yards of total offense in a game featuring eight turnovers, four by each team.

Esser completed 9 of 22 passes for 96 yards and running back Jacob Saetre found little room in gaining just 25 yards on 21 carries, but LRS made enough big plays to secure the win.
