Gonzaga sweeps Saint Mary’s for 2-0 WCC volleyball start

Fresh off an impressive win over No. 23 Pacific on Thursday, the Gonzaga volleyball team continued its stellar play with a straight-set win over Saint Mary’s Saturday in Spokane. Scores were 25-15, 25-17 and 25-19.

The win gave the Bulldogs a 2-0 start to its West Coast Conference schedule – the first time that’s happened since 1991.

Gonzaga used outstanding efficiency to beat the Gaels (5-7, 0-2). Its .489 attack percentage was GU’s best since at least 2004.

Savannah Blinn had 17 kills and Jordan Gasser added 16 kills to lead the Bulldogs.

GU (11-4, 2-0) plays at WCC foe San Francisco on Thursday.

• Kyra Holt had 13 kills and eight digs and McKenna Woodford added 11 kills as Washington State swept Utah (7-6, 1-1) in a Pac-12 Conference match in Pullman. Scores were 25-19, 25-20 and 25-14.

Haley MacDonald chipped in 30 assists and eight digs for WSU (12-2, 1-1), which plays at USC on Friday.

• Jessica Gilbert had nine kills and 10 digs to guide Eastern Washington to a sweep of Northern Colorado (4-11, 0-2) in a Big Sky Conference match in Cheney. Scores were 25-20, 25-19 and 25-19.

It was the Eagles’ first 2-0 start in conference play since 2011.

EWU (7-6, 2-0) plays at Southern Utah on Thursday.

• Courtney Place had 18 kills and 11 digs and North Dakota (12-6, 1-1) topped Idaho in five sets in a Big Sky Conference match in Moscow, Idaho. Scores were 25-23, 25-20, 21-25, 10-25 and 15-9.

Tineke Bierma had 20 kills and Jenna Ellis had 30 digs to lead the Vandals.

Idaho (4-10, 1-1) plays at Northern Arizona on Thursday.

• Nicole Leonard had 15 kills to surpass 1,000 for her career and Whitworth swept George Fox (4-7, 1-3) in a Northwest Conference match in Spokane. Scores were 25-18, 28-26 and 33-31.

Cassandra Mendoza and Haley Vick added 11 kills apiece for the Pirates and Maddye Dinsmore dished out 48 assists.

Whitworth (10-3, 4-0) plays at Pacific in Forest Grove, Oregon, on Friday.

• Jessica Quayle had 17 kills and Rachel Davis handed out 34 assists as Salt Lake (24-10, 8-2) swept North Idaho (10-11, 4-6) in a Scenic West Athletic Conference match in Taylorsville, Utah. Scores were 25-12, 25-18 and 25-20.

Brenna Meehan led the Cardinals with 10 kills and nine digs.

• Community Colleges of Spokane (11-17, 3-1) topped Treasure Valley (3-15, 1-3) 25-22, 25-12 and 25-19 in a NWAC match in Ontario, Oregon.

Football

Defensive lineman Tonga Takai, offensive lineman Isaiah Tuiasosopo and two-way lineman Mauola Malaga were added to the Spokane Shock roster.

Men’s soccer

Sam Engle and Jonah Snyder scored first-half goals and Whitworth blanked Puget Sound 2-0 in a Northwest Conference match in Spokane.

The Pirates held a commanding 14-1 shot advantage over the Loggers (4-4, 2-1).

Whitworth (7-0, 3-0) will look to keep its undefeated record intact Sunday at home against NWC foe Pacific Lutheran. The match will start at 2:30 p.m.

• Brenden Kenley and Alex Saldana scored in the first half and Walla Walla (5-0-4, 3-0-2) held on to beat Community Colleges of Spokane 2-1 in a Northwest Athletic Conference match in Walla Walla.

Marcellous Curtis scored the Sasquatch’s lone goal in the 31st minute. It was unassisted. CCS (4-3-2, 2-2-1) plays Columbia Basin in Pasco on Wednesday.

• Jason Morales had a goal and two assists and Wenatchee Valley (4-3, 2-3) edged North Idaho 4-3 in an NWAC match in Wenatchee.

Kade Murphree and Alec Maldonado scored for the Cardinals (4-3-2, 2-1-2), and North Idaho also benefited from an own goal in the 85th minute.

The Cardinals play Treasure Valley in Ontario, Oregon, on Wednesday.

Women’s soccer

Valerie Sanderson’s header in the 102nd minute lifted Memphis (5-3-1) to a 1-0, double-overtime win over Gonzaga (1-5-4) in a nonconference match in Memphis, Tennessee.

It was the Bulldogs’ final nonconference match of the season. They begin West Coast Conference play at home against No. 6 BYU on Thursday.

• Arielle VanPeursem’s 34th-minute goal was the difference in Whitworth’s 1-0 win over Linfield (4-1-1, 1-1-1) in a Northwest Conference match in McMinnville, Oregon. Kelly Wucherer was credited with the assist.

Pirates’ keeper Andrea Stump made five saves.

Whitworth (5-3, 3-1) plays Willamette in Salem on Sunday.

• Alysha Overland scored in the 70th and 75th minutes to give Community Colleges of Spokane a 4-3, come-from-behind victory over Walla Walla (3-4-2, 2-2) in an NWAC match in Walla Walla.

Maddy Boyd and Anna VanOrder also scored for the Sasquatch (7-0-1, 4-0).

CCS play at Yakima Valley on Wednesday.

• North Idaho and Trinity Lutheran played to a scoreless draw in a nonconference match in Everett, Washington.

In the last minute of double overtime, the Cardinals’ Aliea Son fired a shot from 30 yards out that struck the left side of the crossbar and bounced away.

NIC (3-3-1) plays at Treasure Valley on Wednesday.

Cross country

Community Colleges of Spokane women had the top four individual placers and ran away with the team title at a NWAC race at Lewisville Park in Battle Ground, Washington.

Becca Mildes won, completing the 5,000-meter course in 18 minutes, 41 seconds. CCS’ Kaylee Belknap was second (19:30), Elizabeth Smith was third (19:39) and Harley Strope was fourth (19:42).

Victor Salgado led the Sasquatch men with a fifth-place finish. He completed the 8,000-meter course in 25:56.

Women’s rowing

The Washington State-Gonzaga race at the Head of the Pend Oreille in Priest River was cancelled due to high winds.
