Area roundup: Gonzaga routs Pilots 18-1; two Portland players injured in collision

Jeffrey Bohling had four hits, including a homer and two triples, plus five RBIs, and Gonzaga rolled to an 18-1 victory over Portland on Friday night in Spokane in a game that was delayed for 31 minutes after a scary collision between two Pilots players.

With two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning and GU leading 17-1, left fielder Cody Hawken charged in after a high flyball hit by Tyler Frost when he collided with backpedaling shortstop Matt Kelly.

Both players were taken off the field by emergency personnel and the game resumed.

Portland sports information director Adam Linnman said, according to the team’s trainer, that both players were conscious and could move their extremities. He added that other tests were being done to rule out any else besides perhaps “bad concussions.”

The victory was the fifth in a row for Gonzaga (18-10, 7-3 WCC), tying the Bulldogs’ longest streak this season.

A crowd of 1,533, the fourth-largest in Patterson Complex history, saw the Bulldogs collect 21 hits. Tyler Frost, Justin Jacobs, Jake Roberts and Jace Vandebrake all had three hits. Jacobs had four RBIs and Jarod Gonzales homered and tripled. Frost was credited with a triple for the ball that fell when the Pilots players collided.

Brandon Bailey (5-1) went six innings, giving up four hits, and striking out six. GU pitchers fanned 12 Pilots (13-17, 1-6).

Arizona 8, Washington State 0: Nathan Bannister (4-1) pitched eight innings of three-hit ball, striking out seven, and the Wildcats (19-11, 3-7 Pac-12) blanked the Cougars 8-0 in Tucson, Arizona.

Trek Stemp had two hits for the Cougars (9-18, 2-8 Pac-12). Starter Ian Hamilton (1-7) went 5 1/3 innings and gave up three runs in taking the loss.

Washington 4, Arizona State 2: Gage Matuszak had three hits and Levi Jordan drove in two runs for the Huskies (15-10, 6-4 Pac-12) in a victory over the Sun Devils (16-11, 3-7) in Phoenix.

Jennifer Soria hit a two-run homer for the Sun Devils (27-11, 3-4).

Track and field

Kaytlyn Coleman and Sarah Reiter set records as the Eastern Washington track and field teams swept Montana at the Pelluer Invitational in Cheney.

Coleman broke the school and meet records in the hammer throw at 200 feet, 1 inch, and also won the shot put with a throw of 47-7 1/4. The previous school record was 199-8 by Nicole Luckenbach in 2010.

Reiter turned in the second-fastest 1,500-meter time in school history at 4 minutes, 28.93 seconds to break a 33-year old meet record set by Sherrie Crang of Idaho at 4:29.1

Eastern’s teams hit eight Big Sky Conference qualifying standards during a day that saw the men edge Montana 53-50 in dual meet scoring and the women winning 76-72.

Joey Payne’s victory in the javelin at 219-3 ranks fifth in EWU history and the women’s 4x100 relay winning time of 47.09 ranks 10th.
