Eastern signs big point guard, Luka Vulikic

Eastern Washington’s latest point guard signee has a good 5 inches on graduated star Austin McBroom.

Time will tell whether Luka Vulikic reaches the same stature.

The 6-foot-5, 190-pounder from Serbia is the final piece of a three-man class announced Wednesday by Eastern coach Jim Hayford.

“He’s very talented, has great size and good athleticism,” Hayford said of Vulikic, who had been recruited by SMU until the Mustangs ran out of scholarships.

That’s when SMU’s Larry Brown contacted Hayford, who brought Vulikic to Cheney.

“We have added a fantastic talent in Luka,” said Hayford. “He has played at the highest level of basketball for his age in Europe and competed with great success. He is a point guard with great size for that position.”

Last year, McBroom – a graduate transfer from Saint Louis – averaged 21 points and almost four rebounds while earning all-Big Sky Conference second-team honors.

The 18-year-old Vulikic is coming off a solid season in the Serbian U19 National League, where he averaged 17.5 points, 5.8 assists and 6.5 rebounds.

He will compete for McBroom’s job with returnees Will Ferris and Sir Washington.

“The point guard spot is wide-open for competition,” Hayford said Wednesday.

Previously, Eastern signed Mason Peatling, a 6-8, 215-pound forward from Melbourne, Australia; and Jacon Davison, a 6-4, 175-pound guard from Montebello, Calif.
