Newsmakers: MotoGP champ Lorenzo to leave Yamaha, join Ducati

Changing Ducati says reigning MotoGP world champion Jorge Lorenzo is to join its team at the end of this season. In a statement released Monday, Ducati says the 28-year-old Spanish rider will race with the Italian team through 2018. Mallorca-born Lorenzo, who currently races with Yamaha, has won five world titles in his career – three in MotoGP and two in the 250cc category. Yamaha had already signed Italian great Valentino Rossi for the 2017-18 season. Lorenzo is currently second in the standings behind Marc Marquez.

Hired Louisiana Tech has hired Brooke Stoehr to be its next women’s basketball coach.Stoehr replaces Tyler Summitt, who resigned on April 7 after acknowledging he had an inappropriate relationship. The 25-year-old Summitt is the son of Hall of Fame coach Pat Summitt. He had a 30-31 record over two seasons at Louisiana Tech before his surprising resignation.

Brian Earl, who helped Princeton return to its winning ways during nine seasons as an assistant and associate head coach, has been hired as the men’s basketball coach at Cornell. Earl, 39, becomes the 22nd head coach in Cornell history and replaces Bill Courtney, whose contract was not renewed after six seasons.

Brandin Knight has joined the Rutgers basketball staff after spending the past 10 seasons at Pittsburgh. Rutgers coach Steve Pikiell announced the hiring, giving him a New Jersey native and a top recruiter on his staff.

Declared Freshman guard Malachi Richardson of Syracuse is entering his name into the NBA draft but will not sign with an agent. Richardson started all 37 games and averaged 13.4 points, 4.3 rebounds and 34.4 minutes. He also hit 79 3-pointers, the third-best total by a freshman at Syracuse.
