The Dirt: Nicks Handmade Boots moving into old Display House on East Sprague

By Treva Lind Correspondent

Nicks Handmade Boots, a Spokane company since 1964, plans to move in May into a renovated building at 6510 E. Sprague Ave., formerly the Display House.

The Spokane Valley relocation will more than double space to make and sell work boots, after a move from 9,000-square-foot quarters at 3805 N. Market St. Manufacturing will move first, then retail operations, scheduled to open May 16.

Garco Construction is remodeling the 20,000-square-foot building to include a customer seating area, manufacturing and retail spaces, an employee break room and business offices. The retail section will have a much larger space, including for women’s work boots.

Nicks is owned by Steve Mowe, who through Hunters Prairie LLC bought the property in 2015 for $935,000. He said Nicks, with 28 employees, has experienced higher demand for products and about a 5 percent growth in revenue in 2015 year over year.

The company will continue its focus on handmade, customizable boots, he said. Wildland firefighters are the largest customer base, but its leather boots are bought by other customers seeking heavy-duty footwear, such as with steel toes or specialty industry boots.

SCC to remodel counseling center

A $1.9 million project will remodel the counseling and tutoring center at Spokane Community College.

Contractor Leone & Keeble will do interior upgrades for the 12,300-square-foot center on the campus at 1810 N. Greene St. The work includes relocating offices inside the building and updating space to bring in offices now in other buildings.

Integrus Architecture did the design work.
