Newsmakers: Gonzaga to play at Los Angeles in new college basketball doubleheader, auto racing, tennis

Announced A new men’s basketball doubleheader will be played in Los Angeles featuring Gonzaga, Arizona, BYU and Southern California. The Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame on Wednesday announced the one-day event, to be played at Staples Center on Dec. 3. The Zags will play the Wildcats and the Cougars will face the Trojans. Tickets will go on sale May 4. Game times and television broadcast information will be announced later.

Texas Rangers ace Yu Darvish is scheduled to pitch Sunday in his first minor league rehab start since Tommy John surgery more than 13 months ago. The Rangers say Darvish will pitch for Double-A Frisco in its home game against Corpus Christi. Darvish will go two innings or about 30 pitches.

French official Didier Gailhaguet, who was suspended in the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympic figure skating judging scandal, is running alongside three others in the International Skating Union’s presidential election. The French skating federation president will face Christopher Buchanan of Britain, Jan Dijkema of the Netherlands and Gyorgy Sallak of Hungary. The winner will replace Ottavio Cinquanta, a 77-year-old Italian who has been president for 22 years.

Victor Espinoza will have a chance for an unprecedented three-peat in the Kentucky Derby. Espinoza’s agent, Brian Beach, said the jockey who won the Derby with California Chrome in 2014 and with eventual Triple Crown winner American Pharoah in 2015 has landed aboard long shot Whitmore. The Derby is May 7.

Sidelined The Colorado Rockies placed left-hander Jorge De La Rosa on the 15-day disabled list with a left groin strain and recalled righty Eddie Butler from Triple-A Albuquerque. Butler is available out of the bullpen for Wednesday’s game against Pittsburgh.

Suspended The crew chief for Ricky Stenhouse Jr. has been suspended for Sunday’s race at Talladega Superspeedway for a technical violation found last weekend. Nick Sandler was also fined $20,000 for the violation NASCAR discovered in pre-qualifying inspection at Richmond International Raceway.

Withdrew Second-seeded Gael Monfils pulled out of the BMW Open with a groin injury sustained in practice. Monfils said cold weather may have been behind the injury or “because I’ve played a lot recently.” It was the third consecutive year that Monfils had to withdraw from the clay-court event because of injury. He had a bye into the second round.
