Tia Ramirez’s stained glass piece ‘Light Amidst Darkness’ wins Holocaust Art Contest

Staff reports

Tia Ramirez won the second annual Spokane Community Observance of the Holocaust Art Contest with her stained glass piece “Light Amidst Darkness.” Here is her artist statement:

‘Light Amidst Darkness’

Irena Sendler was a Polish nurse who saved 2,500 children during Nazi occupation by changing their identity and smuggling them out of the Warsaw Ghetto. Because of Irena’s bravery, thousands of generations continue to thrive. This stained glass piece, like Irena, symbolizes light and hope amidst the darkness of the time. The leaves of the tree represent future generations and the roots embody the children Irena saved that are grounded in their heritage. Irena buried the actual names of the children in jars under a tree so after the war the children would know where they came from.
