Tue., Aug. 9, 2016
PORTLAND – Portland police say a pedestrian died and another was injured when they were struck by a vehicle just east of the Highway 26 tunnel.
Sgt. Pete Simpson says the 59-year-old driver fled the scene late Monday, but later called 911 to report he was involved in a crash. Brent McCune of Washington County was booked into jail Tuesday on charges of felony hit and run, reckless driving and driving under the influence of intoxicants.
Traffic investigators believe McCune was driving southbound on I-405 onto Highway 26 when he struck the two people on the roadway.
A 31-year-old woman died at the scene and a 45-year-old man was taken to a Portland hospital.
Portland has had 28 traffic fatalities this year.
