Pay-per-view / Video on demand

“A Hologram for the King” sends Tom Hanks to Saudi Arabia for a comic drama of second chances. It’s based on the novel by Dave Eggers and directed by Tom Tykwer (“Run Lola Run”). R.

The comic documentary “The Million Dollar Duck” follows six wildlife artists competing to get their painting on a U.S. stamp. PG.

Available same day as select theaters nationwide is the international thriller “Disorder,” with Diane Kruger protected by a delusional bodyguard (not rated), plus the comedies “Amateur Night” with Jason Biggs (not rated) and “Joshy” with Thomas Middleditch (R).

Netflix

“The Get Down,” the most expensive Netflix original series to date, dramatizes the ’70s culture of the South Bronx that nurtured hip-hip, punk and disco. From Baz Luhrmann (“Moulin Rouge”) with help from Nas, Grandmaster Flash, Nelson George and others. Six episodes now available.

The Coen Brothers’ “No Country for Old Men” (2007), starring Tommy Lee Jones and Javier Bardem, earned four Oscars, including Best Picture. Also on Amazon Prime. R.

Also new: the brash PG-13 comedies “St. Vincent” (2014) with Bill Murray and Melissa McCarthy and “The Confirmation” (2016) with Clive Owen.

Kid stuff: “Ask the StoryBots: Season 1” is for young tots, and “Project MC2: Season 2” (Netflix Original) continues the adventures of four brainy tween girls.

Amazon Prime Video and Hulu

In “Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation” (2015), the fifth film in the action franchise, Tom Cruise delivers thrilling set pieces and meets his equal in Rebecca Ferguson. PG-13.

Jesse Eisenberg and Kristin Stewart star in “American Ultra” (2015), which reimagines “The Bourne Identity” as a violent black comedy with a slacker stoner hero. R.

“Shaun the Sheep” (2015), from the folks who gave us Wallace and Gromit, was nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Feature. PG.

Hulu

Hulu announced that the free, ad-supported section is ending soon, moving to a new streaming TV hub on Yahoo. Hulu is remaking itself as a strictly subscription service with a live streaming TV component.

HBO Now

“The Peanuts Movie” (2015) brings Charlie Brown and the gang to the screen with the art of 3-D computer animation. G.

The documentary “Hitchcock/Truffaut” (2015) celebrates the art and legacy of filmmakers and friends Alfred Hitchcock and Francois Truffaut. PG-13.

Acorn

Based on the novels of MC Beaton, “Agatha Raisin” is a cheeky new British mystery series starring Ashley Jensen as an amateur sleuth in rural England. New episodes arrive each Monday through August.
