Man critically injured in explosion was making hash oil, fire department says

A man making hash oil in the basement of his home was burned in an explosion Thursday and is in critical condition, according to the Spokane Fire Department.

Crews were called to the 700 block of East Ermina Avenue around noon Thursday for a reported fire. The man was using butane to extract the oil from marijuana when fumes built up in the improperly ventilated basement room and ignited, a fire department news release said.

The man was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where he is in critical condition. Two other adults and three children in the home at the time of the explosion were not injured.
