Newsmakers: Utah partially reinstates Cory Butler-Byrd

Reinstated Utah has partially reinstated suspended receiver Cory Butler-Byrd a day after he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of criminal mischief for damaging a police car and building last month. The school said Tuesday that coach Kyle Whittingham will allow Butler-Byrd to participate in practice and other team activities immediately but he will remain suspended from playing in games indefinitely. University spokeswoman Liz Abel said in an email that there’s no timetable for Butler-Byrd to return to competition and he will not be available to speak to reporters.

Charged Burnley striker Andre Gray is set to be punished by English football authorities for discriminatory comments he made on social media more than four years ago. The comments made by Burnley striker Andre Gray between Jan. 9 and March 11, 2012 appeared anti-gay. They came to light on Saturday, when they were retweeted by other people after he scored his first Premier League goal for Burnley in the team’s 2-0 win over Liverpool. Gray released a public apology after the match.

Seeded Tennis player Serena Williams is the No. 1 seeded woman for the U.S. Open after barely holding on to the top spot in the rankings, and Novak Djokovic is No. 1 among the men. Neither Williams nor Djokovic has played a match since early exits at the Rio Olympics. Williams later said she was dealing with a right shoulder problem, while Djokovic said his left wrist was sore.

Died Authorities say a well-known triathlete, Jim Soroka, from New Hampshire was bicycling with a friend inside a national forest in Maine when he went off a steep mountain road and died. The Oxford County sheriff’s office says Soroka was traveling at about 45 mph Saturday in the White Mountains National Forest when he apparently lost control and veered off the road.

Extended Nevada athletic regulators have extended a temporary suspension of UFC heavyweight Brock Lesnar pending a hearing on his failure of drug doping tests at UFC 200 last month. State Athletic Commission officials say the move approved Tuesday came after the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency found violations of UFC drug policy in June and at Lesnar’s July 9 fight against Mark Hunt.

Granted North Carolina State quarterback Ryan Finley has received an additional season of eligibility by the NCAA. N.C. State announced the NCAA’s decision, making Finley a redshirt sophomore this season.
