Area men: Whitworth beats Willamette in its Northwest Conference opener
Kyle Roach matched his career-high 28 points, making 15 of 18 at the line, with seven rebounds and visiting Whitworth (4-0, 1-0) beat Willamette (1-6, 0-2) 91-79 in the 12th-ranked Pirates’ Northwest Conference opener on Saturday in Salem.
It was Whitworth’s 18th win in a row over the Bearcats.
Christian Jurlina scored 22 points and Kenny Love had 13, while Derek Isaac and Drew Sears added 10 points apiece as all five starters finished in double digits. The Pirates shot 51 percent.
Johnny Verduin led Willamette off the bench with 23 points.
Whitworth will head to fifth-ranked Whitman (4-0) on Tuesday in a match-up of unbeaten Northwest Conference rivals.
CC Spokane 80, Whatcom 68: Geroge Pilimai scored 19 points with seven rebounds and the Sasquatch topped the Orcas in the second round of the Northwest Athletic Conference’s Bigfoot-Cardinal Classic at CCS.
Levi Taylor added 12 points and seven assists for CCS.
Alex Martin paced Whatcom with 28 points.
North Idaho 98, Everett 83: Niko Bevins scored 23 points and the Cardinals (3-1) eliminated the Trojans (4-2) in the consolation bracket of the 2016 Bigfoot-Cardinal Classic at NIC.
Jason James had 14 points and Brevin Brown added 13 for North Idaho.
The Cardinals face Yakima Valley for fourth place on Sunday at 11 a.m. at SCC.
