Skier dies in southwestern Montana avalanche

Associated Press

BOZEMAN – A skier was killed in an avalanche in southwestern Montana.

The Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center said the slide happened Sunday on Henderson Mountain outside Cooke City. The avalanche was about 100 feet wide with snow about 6 feet deep and traveled through timber.

The victim was completely buried. He was located with an avalanche transceiver by members of his party and dug up within 15 minutes, but efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.

The victim’s name and hometown have not been released.

Another skier was partially buried in the same slide, but was uninjured.

On Saturday, a snowmobiler was caught in an avalanche and fully buried in the Northern Madison Range. Center officials say he was located with an avalanche beacon, was uncovered by other members of his party and suffered minimal injuries.
