Seahawks sign RB Kelvin Taylor and LB Ronald Powell, but RB Troymaine Pope and FB Will Tukuafu on IR

By Bob Condotta Seattle Times

The Seahawks on Tuesday made a few moves to their 53-man roster, signing running back Kelvin Taylor and linebacker Ronald Powell. To make room for Taylor and Powell, the Seahawks placed running back Troymaine Pope (ankle) and fullback Will Tukuafu (concussion) on Injured Reserve.

Seattle needed to make a move to add a tailback after Pope suffered what coach Pete Carroll called a “severe” sprained ankle against the Green Bay Packers Sunday. It was a re-injury of an earlier ankle sprain Pope suffered against the Eagles.

Due to Pope’s injury, Seattle was down to two healthy tailbacks at the end of the Green Bay game — Thomas Rawls and Alex Collins.

Taylor, who played at Florida, is the son of former longtime NFL running back Fred Taylor.

Kelvin Taylor was a sixth-round pick by the 49ers in the 2016 NFL Draft. He was waived in the cutdown to 53, then signed to the 49ers’ practice squad, then later released. He was then on Seattle’s practice for about a week earlier this month.

Powell was signed to add depth at linebacker. Powell played in 14 games in 2014 and last year was on the Saints’ Injured Reserve. He was on the Bears’ practice squad this season before being signed by the Seahawks. Like Taylor, Powell played at Florida.

Being placed on IR means the seasons are over for Pope and Tukuafu unless they are later waived off of IR.

Tukuafu suffered a concussion in the win over Carolina on Dec. 4 and had been in the concussion protocol.
