Second of 2 slain south Georgia law officers is laid to rest

Associated Press

AMERICUS, Ga. – The second of two south Georgia police officers killed last week has been laid to rest.

Relatives, friends and police officers from across the state attended Wednesday’s service for Jody Smith, a Georgia Southwestern State University police officer.

WALB-TV reported that after the funeral, a horse-drawn caisson carried Smith’s body across the campus that he had worked to protect.

Smith was assisting Americus police officer Nicholas Smarr as the two responded to report of a domestic dispute outside the campus on Dec. 7. The suspected gunman was found dead later – apparently of a self-inflicted gunshot wound – inside a home where he was hiding.

Smarr, who was also killed, was buried Sunday.

Americus is about 140 miles south of Atlanta.
