Two dogs die in Elk house fire

Spokane County Fire District 4 and South Ponderay Fire and Rescue battle a house fire in icy temperatures in Elk on Friday, Dec. 16, 2016. (Spokane County Fire District 4)

Two dogs died in a house fire on Bridges Road in Elk, but no people were injured in the Friday evening blaze.

A Spokane County Sheriff’s deputy was the first to arrive at 10210 E. Bridges Road after the call went out to Spokane County Fire District 4 at 5:40 p.m. He reported the house was fully involved, according to a District 4 news release.

It was “challenging” for firetrucks to get to the rural home and all water had to be trucked in as firefighters fought the fire in temperatures hovering a few degrees above zero, the news release said. Crews from South Ponderay Fire and Rescue also responded.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
