Area roundup: No. 9 Washington women roll over BYU

From wire reports

Kelsey Plum scored 29 points and No. 9 Washington (12-1) rolled to an 82-70 win over BYU (6-5) on Thursday in Provo, Utah.

Washington dominated the second quarter after a slow offensive start and took a 43-23 lead into halftime.

Plum, the nation’s leading scorer, scored 13 of her 29 points in the second quarter and didn’t miss her first shot until after halftime. The Huskies picked up the defensive intensity in that second and BYU was held to just seven points and shot 3 for 19 from the field.

The Cougars made their best run of the game with a 13-0 stretch to start the third quarter and cut the lead to seven points. They got no closer as Washington responded with a 19-2 run of its own, punctuated by a Chantel Osahor triple from the top of the arc.

Osahor, the nation’s leading rebounder, posted her 10th double-double of the season with 20 points and 14 rebounds.

Cassie Broadhead led BYU with 24 points and Kalani Purcell added 16 points and 10 rebounds.

The Huskies have now won nine straight heading into Pac-12 play. The lone loss of the season came against No. 2 Notre Dame and focus now turns to a conference championship. The Huskies host Washington State on Tuesday in their Pac-12 opener.

Drake 93, Eastern Washington 78: Tisha Phillips scored 20 points and a season-best nine assists, but the Eagles (5-6) were downed by the Bulldogs (7-4) in the consolation game of the 21st Annual Tulane Classic in New Orleans.

Phillips also added six steals and four rebounds. Delaney Hodgins tallied 19 points to extend her double-digit scoring streak to 28 games, while freshman Symone Starks came off the bench and poured in a career-best 16 points.

Starks pulled the Eagles within four points at 62-58 after a 3-point field goal at the 2:48 mark of the third quarter. But Drake went on a 13-3 run to put the game out of reach at 75-61 with 7:54 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Drake shot 56.3 percent from the field, while Eastern was able to post a 46.3 percent shooting performance, but a 34-21 advantage in points off turnovers for the Bulldogs was too much for Eastern to overcome in the team’s final nonconference game of the season.

Eastern Washington went 10 of 26 from beyond the arc.

The Eagles now move onto Big Sky Conference play, as they open the 2016-17 conference slate with rival Idaho on Dec. 31 at Reese Court. Tip-off is set for 2:05 p.m.
