Don’t take your eyes off …

Minnesota running back Rodney Smith is a scoring machine, and if he gets in the red zone he goes back for a second scoring helping as often then not. The sophomore has 15 touchdowns so far in 2016, all of them rushing the ball, and had five multi-touchdown games. Smith also contributed 1,084 rushing yards while averaging 4.9 yards per carry.

When WSU has the ball …

The passing game will be the story of the day. The Golden Gophers defend the pass capably and are ranked 16th in the country, allowing just 6.3 yards per pass attempt. However, three of Minnesota’s regular defensive backs are suspended. Whether or not the Golden Gophers are still strong against the pass without those players could easily decide the game.

Interceptions will be key. The Cougars rank No. 26 nationally in turnover margin, and takeaways have been an emphasis, and hallmark, of Alex Grinch’s defense since he arrived prior to last season. But the Golden Gophers have lost only four fumbles all season. They will turn the ball over when throwing the ball, however, with 12 interceptions this season despite attempting only 25.7 passes per game.
