Area colleges: North Idaho women rally in tournament opener
North Idaho College outscored Highline CC 21-11 in the fourth quarter and eked out a 63-62 win over the T-Birds on Thursday in the first round of the Red Devil Holiday Classic women’s basketball tournament at Lower Columbia College in Longview, Washington.
Lana Berg led a balanced scoring effort, in which three Cardinals finished in double figures, with 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting. Giavanna Sorn and charity Marlatt chipped in 10 apiece.
The Cardinals advance to the semifinals to play host Lower Columbia, which thumped Mt. Hood CC 64-38, on Thursday.
Spokane 72, Everett 59: Bri King scored 24 points to lead CC Spokane to a 72-59 first-round win over Everett CC in the Skagit Valley Tournament in Mount Vernon, Washington.
The Sasquatch (8-1) move on the play Bellevue at 4 p.m. Thursday in the semifinals.
Cali Moscrip led Spokane with 10 rebounds and Imani Guilroy had a team-high three assists.
Uju Chibuogwu had 15 points and eight rebounds to lead the Trojans (2-8).
Whitworth 90, La Verne 70: Grace Douglas scored a career-high 29 points, going 6 of 6 from 3-point range, and the Pirates (4-5) notched a nonconference victory over the Leopards (0-9) at La Verne, California.
Callie Harwood chipped in 23 points and a team-high nine rebounds.
Men’s basketball
North Idaho 111, Grays Harbor 58: Zaequan Satterthwaite scored 26 points on 13-of-17 shooting and added 13 rebounds lead the Cardinals in the first round of the Couer d’Alene Inn-Vitational at NIC’s Christianson Gymnasium.
Markus Golder chipped in 13 points. Drew Sheridan had 12 points and eight boards.
Gonzaga Prep graduate Sam Dowd had a team-high eight assists.
