Area roundup: Whitworth women fall short at Whittier 67-62

Callie Harwood scored 19 points but Whitworth could not overcome a 16-point first half deficit and fell 67-62 to Whittier at the Purple & Gold Poet Classic in Whittier, California on Thursday.

The Pirates (4-6) rallied to briefly take the lead in the third quarter, but Whittier (2-8) bounced back to outscore the Bucs 19-17 in the fourth quarter.

The Poets led 27-11 early in the second, but Whitworth turned things around in the period, outscoring the Poets 24-15 to pull within four at 39-35 at halftime. Harwood scored 11 points in the second period to rally the Pirates.

Whitworth continued to rally in the third quarter, taking its only lead of the game when Jessica Thoens scored to give the Pirates a 44-43 lead five minutes into the period.

Whittier extended its lead back to 62-54 with less than two minutes to play in the game. Whitworth missed five straight shots and three out of four free throws during a five-minute slump.

Grace Douglas made 4 of 5 from beyond the arc for 12 points. Lexi Tinney came off of the bench for 10 points.

Cali Cubel had 17 points to lead four Poet players in double figures.

Whitworth will conclude its trip to Southern California and its participation in the Poet Classic with a game against 24th-ranked Wheaton on Friday.

CC Spokane 73, Bellevue 72: Bri King scored 30 points and the Sasquatch (10-1) edged the Bulldogs (7-4) at the Skagit Valley Tournament in Mt. Vernon, Washington.

King went 11 of 22 from the field, including 7 of 13 from beyond the arc. Janessa Heine scored 14 points with six rebounds and Shaye Swannick added 11 points.

Molly Dixon and Brenda Akoto had 22 points apiece for Bellevue.

CCS faces host Skagit Valley (9-4) on Friday at 3 p.m. for the tournament championship.

Lower Columbia 59, North Idaho 54: Madison Lord and Faye Chartraw scored 10 points apiece and the host Red Devils (11-2) used a 19-9 fourth-quarter run to beat the Cardinals (6-4) at the Lower Columbia Holiday Classic in Longview, Washington.

Shayna Allert scored 14 points for NIC while Lana Berg added 10.
