Idaho woman killed, husband hospitalized from burns

A Cataldo, Idaho, couple in their 70s suffered severe burns Sunday, leaving the woman dead and her husband hospitalized.

Sandra K. Mack, 71, died near a fire pit in the 33000 block of E. Canyon Road, the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office said.

Her husband, William J. Mack, also 71, was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

He had called 911 just before 7:30 p.m. to report he needed help and thought his wife was dead, investigators said.

Medical and fire personnel from the Rose Lake and Kellogg fire departments responded and found the victims. Deputies learned that the couple was near the fire pit that evening when, for an unknown reason, both were burned.

The sheriff’s office is investigating. An autopsy will be performed Tuesday on Sandra Mack.
